How to shrink a GIF

  1. Add a GIF file.
  2. Choose a lower max color count and/or frame skip.
  3. Select Optimize GIF and download.

How this works

Your browser decodes every frame, reduces the color palette to your chosen size (and optionally drops frames), then re-encodes a genuine, independently-verified GIF89a file — no video is uploaded, and no server-side processing is involved.

How this is different from GIF Maker and GIF Cutter

GIF Maker creates a new GIF from images or video, and GIF Cutter trims an existing GIF's frame range. This tool takes an existing GIF and reduces its file size, the same relationship Image Compressor has to Image Resizer.

Common use cases

  • Shrink a large animated GIF for faster loading or messaging limits
  • Reduce a GIF's color count to cut file size
  • Drop frames from a GIF to make it smaller

Frequently asked questions

Is this GIF optimizer free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no signup and no watermark.

Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?

No. Optimization happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to Inqita or stored.

What's the tradeoff with fewer colors?

Fewer colors means a smaller file, but gradients and fine color detail become more banded/blocky. 64 colors is a good default; drop lower only if you need maximum compression.

What does frame skip do?

It keeps only every 2nd or 3rd frame, reducing file size at the cost of smoothness — the total playback duration is preserved by combining the skipped frames' timing into the frames that remain.
