How to Calculate Percentages Correctly

Percentage questions often use the same numbers but ask for different results. Naming the starting value, comparison value, and desired unknown prevents the most common errors.

Find a percentage of a value

To find P percent of X, convert P to a decimal and multiply by X. For example, 15 percent of 80 is 0.15 multiplied by 80, which equals 12. The Percentage Calculator provides a focused input for this question.

Calculate percentage change

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide the difference by the old value, and multiply by 100. The old value is the reference. Moving from 80 to 100 is a 25 percent increase; moving from 100 to 80 is a 20 percent decrease. Those results differ because their starting values differ.

Reverse a percentage carefully

If a final price already includes a percentage increase, dividing by one plus the decimal rate finds the original. If a sale price follows a discount, divide by one minus the discount rate. Simply subtracting the percentage from the final number answers a different question.

Check context and rounding

Round only at the stage required by the task, especially for money or repeated calculations. Taxes, interest, salary, and financial percentages may follow jurisdiction-specific rules that a general calculator does not determine. Use the result for checking or planning and confirm official requirements when consequences are material.
