How to remove a PDF password

  1. Add the password-protected PDF.
  2. Enter its password.
  3. Select Unlock PDF.
  4. Download the unlocked PDF.

How this works

Your browser verifies the password against the PDF's own stored security information, derives the file's real encryption key, and genuinely decrypts every string and stream in the document — producing a real, fully-unlocked PDF, not just a re-saved copy. No file or password is uploaded.

A note on scope

This requires knowing the PDF's password — it does not attempt to guess, crack, or brute-force a password you don't have. It supports the standard RC4-based PDF security handler (the most common, broadly-compatible scheme); a small number of PDFs using newer or non-standard encryption methods may not be supported.

Common use cases

  • Remove a password from a PDF you own once it's no longer needed
  • Unlock a PDF you have the password for, to edit or merge it more easily
  • Remove password protection from your own encrypted document

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF unlock tool free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no signup and no limits.

Do I need to know the password?

Yes — this removes password protection from a PDF you already have legitimate access to. It cannot open a PDF without the correct password.

Is my PDF or password uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to Inqita or stored.

Does this work on every encrypted PDF?

It supports the standard RC4-based security handler used by most PDF software. A small number of PDFs using newer or non-standard encryption may not be supported.
