How to extract a thumbnail from a video

  1. Choose an MP4, WebM, or MOV video file.
  2. Use the slider to scrub to the exact frame you want.
  3. Choose JPG or PNG, then select Capture frame.
  4. Download the captured image.

How this works

The video plays using your browser's own built-in video player. When you capture a frame, that exact moment is drawn onto a canvas and exported as an image — no video is uploaded or re-encoded, and the captured image matches your video's original resolution.

A note on supported formats

Playback depends on your browser's built-in video codec support. MP4 (H.264) and WebM work in every modern browser; some MOV files use codecs a browser can't decode, in which case the video won't preview and no frame can be captured.

Common use cases

  • Create a YouTube or Shorts thumbnail from your own footage
  • Save a specific frame from a video as a cover image
  • Grab a screenshot from a video without a screen-recording tool

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no signup and no watermark.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is opened and played entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to Inqita or stored.

What resolution is the captured image?

The same resolution as your source video — the frame is captured at full quality, not scaled down.

Why won't my video play or load?

Your browser may not support that video's codec. Try converting it to MP4 (H.264) first, or test in a different modern browser.

Can I capture multiple frames from the same video?

Yes. Scrub to a new position and select Capture frame again — each capture downloads separately.
